India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk, but that legacy comes with an enormous environmental footprint—from methane emissions to excessive antibiotic use in cattle. At Climate Angels, we’re always on the hunt for breakthrough innovations that don’t just tweak the system but reimagine it entirely. Zero Cow Factory is doing exactly that. As India’s first precision fermentation company producing animal-free A2 milk proteins, it represents the future of dairy—cleaner, kinder, and scalable.
What Zero Cow Does?
Founded by Sohil and Parini Kapadia, Zero Cow Factory is rewriting the script on how we think about milk. Using a patented process that involves cloning genes from the indigenous Gir cow (Bos Indicus) and leveraging microbial fermentation, they’ve developed three essential milk proteins—two types of casein and one whey protein—without a single cow involved. These proteins can then be combined into end products like milk, cheese, and supplements that are not only vegan and lactose-free but also cholesterol-free and easier to digest.
But this isn’t just a science experiment—it’s a full-blown deeptech enterprise. The team has spent years perfecting the bioengineering and scaling up processes. Today, Zero Cow Factory has already commercially produced over 10,000 liters of protein and has a facility that can manufacture 500 kgs per month, with ambitious plans to expand to 10 tons a month in FY2024. MoUs with global players like Nestlé and Pascual signal strong validation, and Pascual’s VC arm even co-invested in the latest round.
The Why Behind Our Investment
Our decision to invest in Zero Cow Factory was driven by a combination of science, scalability, and sustainability:
Mission-Aligned Innovation: Zero Cow Factory sits squarely at the intersection of climate-tech and food-tech. Animal agriculture is responsible for ~14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with dairy playing a significant role. By producing animal-free milk proteins that are bioidentical to conventional dairy, Zero Cow is helping to decarbonize one of the world’s most entrenched food systems.
Category-Creating Tech: Most precision fermentation players globally are focused on generic whey proteins. Zero Cow Factory is differentiated by being the first in the world to focus on A2 beta-casein protein derived from Indian Gir cows. A2 proteins are considered easier to digest and are gaining traction for their health benefits. This niche not only adds scientific novelty but also commercial defensibility.
Lowest Cost Trajectory: By 2025, Zero Cow Factory is targeting a production cost of $20/kg—significantly lower than most global competitors. This positions them not just as an R&D powerhouse but also as a cost-leader in the alternative dairy ingredient space.
Tech-First Business Model: Zero Cow isn’t trying to become the next plant-based milk brand on supermarket shelves. Instead, they’re positioning themselves as a B2B ingredients and licensing player, with three revenue streams: protein supply to food/Nutra brands, co-development of products, and IP licensing. This asset-light, scalable model is strategically sound and venture-grade.
Strong R&D and Global Recognition: The company has been backed by top global food-tech accelerators and has received grants from BIRAC and other credible agencies. Their acceptance into Mylkcubator (Spain), Plug & Play (USA), and MassChallenge (Switzerland) is further testimony to the quality and potential of their platform.
A Platform for Next-Gen Dairy
Zero Cow Factory’s approach isn’t about imitation. It’s about reinvention. By removing the cow from the equation but keeping the goodness of milk intact, they’re giving rise to a new class of dairy—one that’s ethical, allergen-free, environmentally responsible, and globally relevant.
And this isn’t a moonshot. With commercial pilots underway and meaningful discussions happening with global F&B giants, the company is on the cusp of entering real markets with real volumes. For a country like India, where dairy is sacred but sustainability is urgent, Zero Cow offers a pragmatic middle path that honors both tradition and innovation.
At Climate Angels, we believe the climate crisis will not be solved by policy tweaks alone—it needs radical reinvention of what we eat, how we produce, and who gets to participate in shaping the future. Zero Cow Factory fits this thesis perfectly. They are bold, science-driven, and mission-aligned—and we’re proud to be a part of their journey.
